Première apparition live de ‘The First Time’, à la demande d’un fan avant le concert, qui désirait entendre un titre de ‘Zooropa’.
Autre nouveauté, un ‘Walk on’ entier, avec juste Bono & Edge.
Et puis quelques petites modifications dans l’ordre avec ‘Yahweh’ arrivant au milieu du show et la seconde interpétation de ‘Discotheque’.

United Center
Le United Center est la plus grande salle des Etats-Unis. Les Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) et les Chicago Bulls (NBA) y résident. Ces derniers connurent leur heure de gloire avec Michael Jordan au début et au milieu des années 1990. Une statue célèbre l'époque de ce joueur inégalé à l'entrée de la salle. Les plus grands artistes sont déjà passés dans cette salle (Rolling Stones, Mc Cartney, Springsteen, U2). Depuis son ouverture en 1994, 20 millions de personnes sont déjà venues au United Center.

Historique
Chicago est une ville très spéciale pour U2 qui y joue traditionnellement plus de concerts qu'ailleurs. On en dénombre une vingtaine depuis 1987. En 2001, l'Elevation Tour a fait étape à 6 reprises au United Center (4 fois en mai lors du leg 1, et 2 fois en octobre lors du leg 3). En 1997 pour le Popmart Tour, U2 donna trois concerts d'affilée au Soldier Field, le plus grand stade de la région. Les Joshua Tree et Zoo TV Tour eurent également droit à chacun 4 concerts chicagolais.

Bon, ben, ça se confirme …. pour voir U2 en frande forme, il faut soit habiter les Etats-Unis, soit être financièrement et professionnellement en mesure de s’y rendre. Tant mieux pour les américains et les petits veinards d’ici !
Mais, bon, il faudrait dire au groupe que l’Europe compte plus de 425 millions d’habitants, soit plus qu’outre-atlantique, et que beaucoup de gens aimeraient les voir jouer en salles puisqu’il semble que ce soit le meilleur endroit pour eux d’expérimenter et de jouer d’autres chansons : beaucoup de fans européens auraient eux aussi aimé entendre "An cat dubh", "Into the heart", "The Ocean" …
J’espère que la prochaine tournée durera 6 mois en Europe et 2 mois aux Etats-Unis. Ce serait en effet un juste retour des choses … mais, sur ce point,je sais, faut pas rêver …

I didn’t take notes, but I’ve tried to construct a set list based on my recollections and the basic setlist structure U2 have been following; I referred to the past 4 shows in Toronto as a guideline. This may not be the exact order, but all these songs were performed tonight:

U2 performed a strong show tonight — not surprising considering the fact that Chicago is one of their favorite cities. Personally, I was thrilled to be present for the first performance of "Walk On" on the Vertigo 2005 tour — while introducing the song, Bono mentioned it was the first time they played it this tour. Their lack of practice was evident, though, as Bono forgot the closing lyrics and openly asked all present if someone knew the rest of the lyrics. Moments later, a member of the road crew produced printed sheets which Bono carried back to center stage to sing the rest of the song. [I guess he didn’t hear me singing the guide vocal "All that you fashion, all that you make …" etc. — I wasn’t loud enough.]
Another surprise edition to the set list was "The First Time" from ZOOROPA — not sure if this was the first time (pardon the play on words) they’ve played it on the Vertigo 2005 tour, but it’s the first time (I’ve said it again!) I’ve ever heard them perform it.
I’m in a decided minority, but I was ecstatic that the encores opened with "Discotheque", an unheralded gem from the U2 catalog, IMHO. I think they could punch up the arrangement a bit (it lacked the funky impact of the live version on the "Please" CD single), but the light show made up for the deficiencies of the performance to some extent.
Bono sounded great, esp. on the Pavoratti/operatic section of "Miss Sarajevo." The Edge was masterful as usual, the only hitch in his performance coming at the beginning of "With or Without You" when his Infinite Guitar set-up produced a bunch of feedback. The band seems to have cut back on the use of the light curtains/screens, which returns the focus to their performance (where it should be).
All in all, this was a great show! Not quite as good as the fourth Chicago show on May 12th, but probably better than the May 10th "Bono’s Birthday" show that will be on the upcoming Vertigo tour DVD. Now I need to get some sleep before seeing the boys again tomorrow night for Chicago show #2!!!

du tout bon…je ne suis pas specialement fan de walk on mais c’est du sang neuf, c’est bon, en plus the first time excellent…c’était clairement le concert a voir !!!
